Missing in America Project Region 1, Veteran Recovery Program

"It's the Right Thing to Do"

Our mission is to locate, identify and inter the unclaimed cremains of veterans through the joint efforts of private, state and federal organizations.   These forgotten veterans have served our country and, as such, deserve to be buried with honor and respect.

Six thousand remains have been located nationwide. To date, five hundred seventy-one of those have been identified as veterans, and Missing in American Project has inturred three hundred eighty-seven of those with final honors and respect.

As of October 2009 MIAP Region 1 has located two hundred sixty remains, identifying eight as veterans. The cremains of these eight veterans were interred with those of two other veterans found in private homes. The oldest of these cremains dated back to 1812.

There are thousands of funeral homes in MIAP Region 1 that may have cremains; there are probably an unknown number of cremains located in private homes as well. Many of these veterans' remains languish in the basements of funeral homes throughout the country due to a lack of knowledge regarding their eligibility for military burial, or because their families were unable to afford burial costs.

Final Honors Final Rest

All veterans who have served one day in combat or fulfilled their enlistment contract, who were honorably discharged and lived in their state for one day after discharge, or completed twenty years in a reserve unit, are eligible for military burial.
